Collective and Single-Electron Interactions of Electron Beams with Electromagnetic Waves, and Free-Electron Lasers*
نویسنده
چکیده
The field of radiation emission from electron beams is reviewed with special reference to work related to free-electron lasers. Different schemes o f interaction in periodic structures, electromagnetic slow-wave structures, and in transverse confining force are distinguished. Various effects and devices such as traveling wave amplifiers, Smith-Purcell radiators, Cerenkov and bremsstrahlung-free electron lasers, cyclotron resonance masers, coherent bremsstrahlung and channeling radiation are discussed and the differences and relations among them are explained. A simple comprehensive model is developed to describe electron-beam interaction with an electromagnetic wave in periodic electromagnetic structures. The model is general enough to describe both collective and single-electron modes of iiateraction and quantum mechanical, classical and Fermi degenerate regimes. Simplified expressions are developed for the gain by stimulated emission of radiation and for gain conditions of the Smith-Purcell-Cerenkov type free-electron lasers under conditions of very thin electron beams and infinite interaction length.

Propagation and Interaction of Electrostatic and Electromagnetic Waves in Two Stream Free Electron Laser in the Presence of Self-Fields
A relativistic theory for two-stream free electron laser (FEL) with a one-dimensional helical wiggler and ion-channel guiding in the presence of self-fields are presented. A dispersion relation (DR) which includes coupling between the electromagnetic and the electrostatic waves is derived from a fluid model, with all of the relativistic terms related to the transverse wiggler motion. This DR is...
متن کاملSpace-frequency model of ultrawide-band interactions in free-electron lasers.
The principle of operation of intense radiation devices such as microwave tubes, free-electron lasers, and masers, is based on a distributed interaction between an electron beam and electromagnetic radiation. Some of the effects emerging during the interaction involve a continuum of frequencies in their broadband spectrum. We developed a three-dimensional, space-frequency theory for the analysi...

Magnetically confined plasma can be heated with high power microwave sources. In spherical torus the electron plasma frequency exeeds the electron cyclotron frequency (EC) and, as a consequence, electromagnetic waves at fundamental and low harmonic EC cannot propagate within the plasma. In contrast, electron Bernstein waves (EBWs) readily propagate in spherical torus plasma and are absorbed str...
متن کاملElectromagnetically confined plasma target for interaction studies with intense laser fields
The paper describes a novel application of an electron beam ion trap as a plasma target facility for intense laser–plasma interaction studies. The low density plasma target ( 10/cm) is confined in a mobile cryogenic electromagnetic charged particle trap, with the magnetic confinement field of 1–3 T maintained by a superconducting magnet. Ion plasmas for a large variety of ion species and charge...

In this paper, by using a quantum hydrodynamic plasma model which incorporates the important quantum statistical pressure and electron diffraction force, we present the corrected plasmon dispersion relation for graphene which includes a k quantum term arising from the collective electron density wave interference effects (which is integer and constant and k is wave vector). The longitudinal ...
